Since we have a carpet in the class, our first and second graders enjoy rolling around during teaching time. As I expressed my frustrations to my colleague Mambwe, begging her for some advice as to how I could keep them from rolling; she explained that most of these kids do not have a carpet at home. Some have mats, but most do not have something as soft and fuzzy as a carpet. This new perspective softened my heart and allowed me to appreciate their joy of having something as simple as a carpet for them to feel. It made me want to stop teaching and start rolling around with them.
